SARA News - The "we're still here!" edition.

Hello dear SARA readers,

We'd like to thank you.

Here at SARA, we are actual people.  I know, right?  Epically amazing.  We have soccer-mum cars, mortgages, dust bunnies under the bed and 'it's a bit small' pay packets.  We're people you see on the street, likely wearing trackies and sporting something lunchy on the fronts of our t-shirts, as we ate at the computer.

We're extremely normal.

Well, except for the fact that we're constructing steamy sex scenes in our heads about sixteen hours of the day, and a further four hours are spent wondering where to leave the body that became dead in chapter two so that the hero can find it, thus perform consequent heroic deeds and ergo, get the girl.

That leaves four hours for sleeping, toting kids to sports (and reading whilst waiting in the car!) and writing blog posts.

You may have noticed we haven't posted good news for a while, a phenomenon we can link back directly to the fact that there are sadly only twenty-four hours in a day.  It's not because AWESOME THINGS haven't happened...

But thanks for sticking with us.  We love you for it.   No-one said it better than Sahvage: truly, madly, deeply.

Liana Skrzypczak is one of our newer members, and hel-lo!, girl be making WAVES!  Liana is very excited to have been awarded the shared-winner gong for the Hachette Mentoring Program for her dystopian YA manuscript, Gold, along with another Adelaide writer, Rose Hartley.

Reading Adventures in August

Hello, dear SARA followers!

Have you exhausted your supply of firewood yet, as we have, spending July sitting in front of the fire with your trackies on, a good book and a glass of your favourite?  

The sun is just starting to make an appearance through the day here in the chilly Adelaide Hills, and I for one, could not be happier.  

I can feel the hammock/book/glass of something cold combo coming on!  Yay!  My favourite reading position!


Here's what the lovely Beck Nicholas has been reading of late, though probably in the former scenario, rather than the latter.  There's been snow...

You Make Me by Erin McCarthy

Beck says:

This is a NA title I saw recommended by someone on facebook. It was cheap and I was interested because it’s a contemporary Wuthering Heights.

I would describe it in one word – intense. Which, I think, is exactly what I would have expected if I’d stopped to think before. At the beginning our heroine, Cat,at has built herself the perfect life but we know as soon as Heath arrives on the scene that it is all going to have to break apart. And it’s painful to read. The intensity made for a page turner and I really enjoyed it except because of the pain between the two main characters I wasn’t quite sure I believed entirely in the happy ending. It still worked for me overall.

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

Beck:  This YA contemporary romance was a perfect summer beach read, for the middle of winter. I laughed and I cried and it was fun with a dash of romance and a lot about the heroine, Belly, growing up. I loved her transformation from oblivious and self-absorbed at the beginning to having a little more understanding of those around her. It’s told around the summer she’s 16 but there are regular flashbacks to other summers to show us her history with the summer house she’s visiting and the people she sees only in the summer. I really liked this one.

And just who is Beck Nicholas, you might ask?

She's the author of Lifer (coming out in December) and a SARA!

Asher is a Lifer, a slave aboard the spaceship Pelican. UP-CLOSE with South Aussie YA and New Adult author Danielle Belwater!

Tell us about your writing journey. How many manuscripts and years before publication?

If there was a prize for starting things - books, hobbies, crafts, sports - then I would win, hands down. Hand me the trophy! It’s finishing them that’s the problem. I have the first few chapters of a few different projects…


I have half a book on my experience learning to ride a horse, a synopsis of a fantasy trilogy, the first chapter of a kids' book, a sketchy draft of a manuscript about my travels in Europe, the list goes on. But have I done anything with any of it? I’m afraid not.


It’s amazing what impending motherhood and the desire to not want to go back to work can do. I wrote the first draft of Of Fire & Roses in three months. Within six months it was contracted to Evernight Teen Publishing.


Can you tell us more about your life in rural SA and what you get up to when you're not writing?


There is nothing better than space. Lots and lots of space - oh, and animals! When I’m not writing, I’m probably thinking about writing, or pretending I’m not thinking about writing. I also watch my horses. Sometimes I even ride them. I live for my two girls, who I love dearly, but do on occasion wish I could donate them to charity.

You write under a pseudonym. Why so, and why did you pick the name you have?


Now there is a funny story! At least it’s funny now. I wasn’t laughing a week ago. My original pseudonym was named for a fictional place in my favourite series of books. But as I learnt only 10 days from release, some authors aren’t always happy about that! Also being stuck in an out-of-the-way place where there is no internet has made for a very interesting few days. That was how Belwater was born.


The 'Danielle' comes from a character from my favourite movie, Ever After. It’s one of those movies that always leaves me with the warm fuzzies.


Why does YA and 'new adult' appeal to you?


I struggle with the concept of growing up. I often look behind me and wonder where did the time go? What did I do with it? Did I make a difference? They are tough years to get through and I survived through my love of books and movies.


I see myself in those who would be reading my novel, and if I help even just one person get through another day, then it has all been worth it.


Finally, please tell us about your latest release!


Music speaks to me. For Of Fire & Roses, I was listening to Never Let Me Go by Florence + The Machine. The haunting music and dark lyrics are a lament to heartbreak so cruel that only death can bring release. I thought to myself, what if love can defy death?


Of Fire & Roses tells the story of Nate West who is dealing with his mother’s tragic death and moves to a small out-of-the-way town with his father. Shortly after relocating, he meets Cora, whose family is cursed with pain and loss.


But loving Cora is going to take more courage and determination than Nate ever thought possible when he becomes the curse’s next target.
